COLONIAL BEACH, VA (October 20, 2009). A new study by Donley Technology shows that software products for managing and creating Material Safety Data Sheets ( MSDSs) are now offering more features to meet international requirements. And with an increasing emphasis on the Internet as a hosting and distribution vehicle, most of the systems are even more accessible to the global market. Sixty-seven percent of the products in the study are now web-based.
"Environmental directives that have emerged from the European Union (EU), together with an international focus on sustainable operations, have created a demand for more efficient environmental, health and safety (EH&S) information management on a global scale," according to Elizabeth Donley, industry analyst and president of Donley Technology. "And if OSHA adopts a recent proposed rule to use the Globally Harmonized System (GHS) format for Safety Data Sheets (SDSs), most companies that do business in the US will need to re-evaluate their current MSDS software."
Fortunately, many MSDS software developers anticipated this demand and have already incorporated features to meet these needs. For example, 61% of the MSDS software products in the 2009 study support the GHS-SDS format, up from only 48% in 2005. In addition, 24% of the products include features to manage a substance inventory under the EU's REACH regulation.
The results of the Donley Technology study are available in the seventh edition of the MSDS Software Report. This 1037-page electronic report presents detailed profiles of 66 systems for managing and creating MSDSs and includes 49 comparison tables to help you select the best system for your needs. It helps you compare such features as data entry options, MSDS formats, search and retrieval options, chemical inventory tracking, regulatory compliance support, and reporting options. The report also describes how the various products can be customized to meet your needs. It covers hardware/software requirements, price, and much more.
The MSDS Software Report is available in HTML or as a PDF file for $339 by calling Donley Technology at (804) 224-9427.
